Job description

The post-doctoral associate (PDA) will perform collaborative research titled "Greenland-scape" under the guidance of a PI at GSFC and two Co-Is at partner institutions  The PDA will investigate the use of the NASA-supported Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM) to infer horizontal variability in both subglacial topography and sliding rate across slow-flowing regions of the Greenland Ice Sheet by inverting medium-complexity ice-flow models. These models will be constrained by satellite-velocity and airborne radar-sounding observations, and the PDRA will validate them against more physically complete COMSOL models. Finally, they will help incorporate into an update to the BedMachine Greenland product and use this result to further elucidate Greenland’s subglacial geology when synthesized with other geophysical datasets (e.g., seismics, gravity and magnetics).

Qualifications:

- Valuable prior experience using ISSM, COMSOL or another ice-flow model, numerical modeling of the Earth system, polar geophysics and geology, MATLAB, Python or related programming languages. Strong written and verbal communications skills are essential. A Ph.D. in Earth sciences or a related field is required upon starting the position.

- This project is funded by the NASA Earth Surface & Interior program, and 100% funding is available for two years. Travel funding is available to collaborate and present at national meetings. The start date is flexible, but no later than October 1, 2023 is required.
Remote work from within U.S. may be possible

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to anegri@umd.edu.
