Job description

WSYR-TV, NewsChannel 9, Syracuse, NY has a rare opening in its weather department. Become part of the award-winning NewsChannel 9 Storm Team. While the snow makes most of our weather headlines, we have four seasons of forecasting.

The Weekend Morning Meteorologist will also fill in as needed during the week when other Meteorologists are away. Weekday duties will also include reporting on weather/environmental related stories across multiple platforms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Produce and present weather-related reports for all platforms.
  • Ensures that all weather-related content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
  • Writes and delivers weather-related stories in a clear and concise manner.
  • Assists in writing, copy editing, researching, and coordinating weather programming.
  • Responds to breaking and/or severe weather events as required.
  • Works closely with the weather team to develop comprehensive weather coverage.
  • Participates in promotional activities including public appearances.
  • Writes web stories detailing the local forecast daily.
  • Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • 1 year experience in weather presentation preferred.
  • Ability to write stories from beginning to end.
  • Ability to shoot pictures and edit stories from beginning to end.
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Wordpress is helpful
  • Proficiency with WSI is helpful.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of the field of Meteorology.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Flexibility to work any shift.
