Greetings,

With the semester's end quickly approaching, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids again invites you and your students to consider attending the 2015 Great Lakes Operational Meteorology (GLOM) Workshop. GLOM will be held August 25-27, 2015 at the Amway Grand Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. If you already have an idea of how many people will be attending, please e-mail me Evan Webb.

For those of you interested in presenting, you will find a preliminary call for abstracts and subject matter outline below. There is no need to reply with an abstract at this time. There will be a more formal call for abstracts at a later date, and you will then have an opportunity to submit an abstract and indicate the presentation format you prefer.

We will tentatively require of presenters one to two objectives and one to two audience takeaways with their abstracts to give attendees an idea of what to expect. The goal is to make it easy for attendees to bring research to their operations.

There are three presentation formats tentatively planned:

  1. Oral Standard Duration: 10-15 minutes with 5 minute Q&A
  2. Oral Speed Presentation: 5 minute briefing with 2-3 minute Q&A
  3. Poster Presentation

We are looking for presentations that preferably emphasize, but are not limited to, the following subject areas:

Marine

  • Beach Hazards (e.g., rip currents, water quality)
  • Water quality
  • Wave modeling
  • Waterspout forecasting and observations
  • Cool season wind events
  • Forecasting challenges or case studies
  • Discussion with partners

Severe Convection

  • MCS propagation/ maintenance over the Great Lakes
  • Dual Pol successes and applications
  • Near Storm Environment monitoring
  • Case studies

Winter

  •  Lake Effect/Lake Enhanced precipitation
  •  Effects of lake ice on precipitation
  •  Risks and impacts to transportation
  •  Synoptic events 

Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)

  • Leveraging ensembles
  • Model Blender
  • Convection allowing models (HRRR, ARW WRF, etc.)
  • Planned NWP upgrades from NCEP

Climate 

  • Great Lakes trends
  • Seasonal outlook techniques
  • Drought/flood and frost/freeze impacts to our agricultural community

Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) / Impact-Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) 

  • Effective Communication
  • Minimizing economic impacts of extreme weather
  • Building community preparedness & resiliency

Fire Weather

  • Pattern recognition and forecast techniques
  • Interaction with partners

Aviation
