Richard Somerville and Anne Thompson garner top AGU honors

Congratulations Anne Thompson and Richard Somerville!

The Honors and Recognition Committee and the Union Selection committees are please to announce the recipients of the American Geophysical Union’s 2015 Union medals, awards, and prizes.

AGU’s vision is to collaboratively advance and communicate science and its power to ensure a sustainable future. Our honorees’ achievements help build the foundations on which we will realize that vision.

Among the winners are Adjunct Professor, Anne Thompson and Richard Somerville (B.S.'61).

Roger Revelle Medal
Anne M. Thompson, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

The Roger Revelle Medal is given annually to one honoree in recognition for “outstanding contributions in atmospheric sciences, atmosphere-ocean coupling, atmosphere-land coupling, biogeochemical cycles, climate or related aspects of the Earth system.”

Climate Communications Prize
Richard C. J. Somerville, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The award, which was established by AGU in 2011, recognizes excellence in climate communication as well as the promotion of scientific literacy, clarity of messaging, and efforts to foster respect and understanding for science-based values related to climate change.
