The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder is seeking a Coupled Data Assimilation Research Scientist to work in the Modeling and Data Assimilation Division of the NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL). The Research Scientist will be tasked with the development of strongly coupled data assimilation methods that allow observations of the ocean (atmosphere) to impact the atmosphere (ocean) using ensemble-based estimates of error covariances, to improve forecasts of water availability and extremes (such as atmospheric rivers). This research can include developing new localization strategies for ensemble-based data assimilation and augmenting existing algorithms with machine learning techniques. The research and development will be conducted using the JCSDA Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration (JEDI) data assimilation framework, the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation framework (GSI), and the NOAA Unified Forecast System (UFS).
