Description
The University of Maryland (UMD) Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with strong interest and experience in passive microwave remote sensing and modeling. The successful candidate will contribute to relevant projects for the lab. Position location is NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.Responsibilities may include:
- Microwave land surface emissivity model development, testing, and validation
- Satellite precipitation retrieval development and validation
- Optimization of precipitation retrievals for land surfaces and snow cases
- Radiometer constellation calibration projects
- Contributions to peer reviewed research publications, conference orals and posters, white papers, and relevant agency and international working groups
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Physics, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with radiative transfer (microwave), satellite data assimilation and retrieval techniques.
- Proficiency in Python programming language and experience/exposure to other programming languages (Fortran)
- Prior experience in data visualization using Python tools.
- Good understanding of Unix/Linux OS and scripting.
- Excellent skills in manipulating large volumes of data; familiarity with common data formats, such as netCDF and HDF5.
- Prior knowledge and hands-on experience in machine learning (ML) algorithm implementation is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
