ABOUT VAISALA AND THE GIANT LEAP INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Giant Leap Internship program aims at providing students with valuable and meaningful working experience and acquaints them with an internationally operating company. During their time at Vaisala, students will be assigned a challenging project that they will present to the head of the business area or unit at the end of the internship. The assignments do not necessarily have to be separate projects - the students can be integrated into an existing development project or other challenging process. Assignments can be completed either individually, in pairs, together with an experienced Vaisala employee or as part of a group. What is important is that the students are well integrated and feel part of the Vaisala team.

PROJECT: Evaluation of Lightning Data from Different Lightning Locating Systems
The geolocation of lightning discharges is important in a wide variety of applications. These include lightning warning and safety applications, thunderstorm nowcasting and forecasting, locating lightning-caused damage to resources and infrastructure, risk assessment, geophysical research, insurance, and a variety of other real time and forensic applications. The most common way to geolocate lightning is by using a lightning locating system (LLS). The attributes of lightning data available from various LLSs, including Vaisala’s National Lightning Detection Network and GLD360, are linked to the types of electromagnetic emissions to which they are sensitive and may contain complementary information.
RESPONSIBILITIES (What the position entails)
Vaisala seeks to ensure that it is at the forefront of understanding lightning data from various sources and using this understanding to enhance its technology. This project will be focused on examining and understanding the value of lightning datasets in various applications and building tools that allow exploration of lightning data from different sources.
REQUIRED SKILLS OF THE INTERN:
- Proficient in MATLAB and/or Java programing.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills required.
- Knowledge of lightning physics, electromagnetics, characteristics, parameters, and applications preferred.
PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND OF THE INTERN:
Pursuing or finished Master’s degree preferably in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or Atmospheric Sciences.
